Ethical Approach
My view on ethics in nature photography and wildlife filmmaking is clear. There is one rule I observe at all times, “The welfare of the subject is more important than the photograph.” Furthermore my work must convey the essential truth of what I observed at the time it was created.
The Truth of the final Image
I feel strongly that compelling visuals should be captured with very minimal need for post-production. To achieve this integrity, I invest time in developing technical, creative, and field skills, researching our subjects and harnessing the right tools to ensure I create my vision in the camera.
Welfare Of Subject Comes First
My method of working is to shoot subjects from both an ethical and artistic standpoint. The welfare of our subjects is paramount. I extend respect to both the subject and its environment. I strive to create imagery which reflects the trust my subjects have for me.
Compassionate Creativity
The objective of my work is to evoke curiosity, compassion and a call for the conservation of nature. My creative vision is to represent wildlife with dignity and honesty. I do not intend to create images that cheapen or belittle wildlife for the purpose of entertainment.
The Field Studio
I prefer to shoot cold-blooded animals and invertebrates in situ. I never remove animals from the wild to a studio for photography.
Birds At The Nest
I keep shooting of birds at the nest to a minimum and do whatever I can to avoid disturbing nesting birds. I study bird breeding behaviour and have experience conducting breeding bird surveys for the RSPB.
Strictly No Baiting
I do not use baiting of any kind. Baiting may put an animal in danger or adversely affect its behaviour, either directly or through irresponsible habituation. In the early stages of my career, I decided against luring wild animals for the purposes of photography or filming.
I choose to work with wildlife ethically and respect the Earth, its ecosystems and all living beings.
